Pandemic Champions

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

Our Members. Their Efforts. Your Community.

Atmos Energy has a proven track record of maintaining safe and reliable natural gas service under many adverse conditions.  This current COVID-19 pandemic will be no different.          During these unprecedented times, our focus remains the same: the safety of our 4,800 employees, our more than 3 million customers, and the 1,400 communities we proudly serve.

  • Atmos Energy employees and contractors will continue to maintain and operate critical natural gas infrastructure in communities under shelter in place orders.

  • Our service technicians are emergency responders and necessary for the safe operations of the gas system. We have an obligation to the public, our communities, and our employees to keep service technicians healthy and available to respond to emergencies

We will perform essential services in compliance with social distancing guidelines so that we limit the spread of COVID-19 to ensure the safety of our employees, customers, and communities.

  • If necessary, we have plans in place to suspend all non-emergency work to maintain the health and safety of our employees, customers, and communities.

Safety Actions We’re Taking:

  • On April 6, in support of the CDC recommendations, our employees are wearing cloth face coverings when working outside or around others unless doing so creates a safety risk or existing safety protocols require different personal protective equipment (PPE).

Employees have been trained and are taking COVID-19 prevention measures recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

  • Employees perform self-temperature checks prior to reporting to work outside the home and stay home if they have a fever.

  • Employees who work in the community are trained to practice physical distancing to slow the spread; during this time, employees are staying six feet or more away from others as they work unless safety otherwise required.

  • Smaller crews are working on compliance and system projects.

  • Safety meetings may be held electronically or when on the jobsite, are held in smaller numbers and locations to support six feet of physical distance between employees.

  • Employees are provided sanitizing products for themselves as well as for equipment and vehicle cleaning.

  • We are frequently cleaning and disinfecting facilities and equipment.

  • More than 95% of our workforce is working remotely.

  • We are following the CDC’s Interim Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to Coronavirus Disease 2019 and directed contractors to do so as well.

  • We are following the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA)’s Guidance on Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19.

  • We have visitor protocols, including temperature checks, in place to limit access to Atmos Energy locations.

  • We have eliminated non-essential business travel and follow CDC guidelines for self-monitoring following personal travel.

  • Contractors have been advised to comply with social distancing on the job site, to keep sick employees at home, wash hands often and consistent with CDC guidelines, and notify Atmos Energy if any worker is feeling sick.

  • Workers practice recommended CDC preventive hygiene measures on job sites.

  • Construction sites have an appropriate number of portable toilets for workers.

  • Workers maintain physical distancing during meal and rest breaks.

  • To do our part to slow the spread, we have screening protocols in place with customer service agents (as well as employees if on-site) that we can safely stop some types of work and safely limit when service technicians will be in homes or businesses so that these emergency responders remain healthy and available to respond to emergencies.

We are working closely with regulatory, government, and emergency management organizations as well as industry peers and partners across our service territory to stay updated on COVID-19, including:

  • Center for Disease Control and Prevention;

  • Occupational Health & Safety Administration;

  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration;

  • Public service commissions across our eight-state service territory; and

  • American Gas Association.

  • We have temporarily suspended natural gas disconnections for non-payment as well as certain other work including construction projects that might otherwise temporarily interrupt service.

  • If customers are experiencing financial hardship, we have protocols and services available to help, including ongoing support programs such as Sharing the Warmth and Budget Billing.

  • We announced a $1.5 million donation to quickly stock the shelves at local food banks around the country.  We are also partnering with various non-profit agencies, schools, and hospitals throughout our eight-state service territory to assist the community.

The situation is evolving but our commitment remains the same: safely and reliably delivering natural gas service.
